FSA EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT - TANYA

This Giving Season, we at FSA wanted to give thanks to dedicated and highly qualified team members such as Tanya Aviles who has been with FSA for over 2 years. She currently oversees the 0-5 Preschool Program with FSA’s Behavioral Health Services. The experience of learning new skills while working with the 0-5 population along with gaining more experience with working with teachers and parents is one aspect of what drew her into her program. When asked about her role with our community and her program this is what Tanya had to say:

“The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that my program is making a positive impact in the lives of young children’s mental health and helps prevent future mental health issues by helping their care providers (parents and teachers) learn to better interact with the child, understand them and effectively manage their behavior in a positive manner.

My program helps children in our community that are in the 0-5 range learn how to regulate their emotions, increase cooperation, follow directives, express their needs/wants in an appropriate manner and learn appropriate social skills. Additionally, my program helps parents and teachers in our community learn to enhance their relationship with children in the 0-5 range along with learning positive behavior management skills.

Good mental health equates to better communal positive interactions, hence, the more we improve an individual’s mental health and the more we can promote understanding of mental health among the individual’s care system the more our communities will have individuals with stable mental health and with empathy for others.”

FSA’s continual commitment to strengthening communities one family at a time is what drives our passion and service. And, that passion and commitment is ever so evident in the dedicated team members across all of our programs. On June 13th, 2019 we wanted to shine that spotlight on our Child Development Center team members that have been with our family throughout our years of providing quality care and service. Because, it’s our valuable team members that make Family Service Association a family, and a leader in our communities. It’s about family and for us this is community.

Also recognized were FSA’s Child Development Center’s 10 Year Anniversary Team Members: Ariana Lopez, Lorena Andrade, Demarie Verges, Noemi Aguilar, Mirian Mora, Lydia Young.

Longevity awards for Child Development Team Members that have been with FSA for five, ten, fifteen, and twenty years demonstrates their passion for the work they do and their commitment to our community. These accolades are held annually and this is the first year that team members are celebrated individually by department. Recognizing their greatness sets a standard of excellence that should be consistently emulated. Thank you for all you do team!

Thank You Riverside County Sheriff's Academy!

On July 1, a team of 28 Riverside County Sheriff’s Academy recruits and their instructors helped clean and organize the Family Service Association Central Kitchen/Distribution Center. This enthusiastic group volunteered for a 3-hour shift helping:

• Sweep, mop and wash walls throughout the warehouse

• Wash wire shelving racks, refrigerator doors, windows and sills

• Wash down exterior of building and clean building perimeter

• Help pack and bag food for lunches

• Wash pots and pans

The group will finish their 6-month Basic Peace Officer Training course in August.  This Community Project was a benefit to Family Service Association and a team-building project.

The recruit in charge was “Patty” Myriam Guerra.  Additional Sheriff’s Academy Recruits in this senior class helping at the FSA site included Guerra, Ruelas, Garcia, Bowdry, Carter, Shinn, Becerrill, Crux. Ruano, Buenrostro, Harlow, Kimsy, Craine, Labaco, Erwin, Dohanyos, Camacho, Limen, Baxter, Vazquez, Munoz and Salazar. Instructors participating included lead Sgt. Stolte, Inv. Cleary, Inv. Munoz, Cpt. McAuliffe, and Dpty. Brito-Gonzalez. Another group of 28 helped with demolition and prep work for painting and a facade rebuild for the City of Calimesa City Hall buildings. 

We sincerely appreciate their support of FSA and their endeavors to keep the community safe.

Family Service Association has been providing early care and education services in Riverside county for over 25 years. We currently operate 10 child development centers throughout the county serving more than 1500 children each day. Our commitment to children and families led us to recognize the need for on-going professional development of those who work directly with children as well as support for those who are a child’s first teacher, their parents.

In winter of 2000 Family Service Association held their first Child Development Conference. The Conference is dedicated to supporting early childhood professionals, parents, early childhood students, administrators, and others who work with young children in educational, medical and home settings. Each year we bring in recognized leaders in Child Development to speak to our participants about best practices as well as other topics of interest to those who work with and parent children.

This year is our 19th annual conference and we are excited to present our keynote speaker: Rae Pica, education consultant, author and host of her own radio show on the BAM Radio Network. The HOPE (Healing. Outreach. Prevention. Education) Collaborative, the Child Abuse Prevention Council for Riverside County since 2013 is hosting its 46th Conference on April 4th at the Riverside Convention Center from 8:30 am to 3 pm.  This year’s theme is “A Community Conversation About Child Abuse.” 

This year we are excited to present two noteworthy keynote speakers: Theresa Covington, MPH, and Jennifer Jones, MSW. Theresa (Teri) Covington is the Director of Within Our Reach at the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities and has over 40 years’ experience in child health and safety. She is working to advance policy and practice recommendations at the federal and state levels from the National Commission to eliminate Child Abuse and Neglect Fatalities. Jennifer Jones currently serves as the Director of the Change in Mind (CiM) Institute at the Alliance for Strong Families and Communities. The change in Mind Institute, with funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation serves as a hub for disseminating knowledge on the latest advances in neurosciences, providing training and technical assistance, and expanding opportunities for the transformation of organizations and systems as they adapt to the new application of the science.

Other presentations at this year’s conference include a panel of professionals who work within different areas in child welfare (e.g., medical, education, social work, etc.), a cultural factors presentation, two lived experience presentations presented by a former foster youth and father now parent partner who had an experience within the child protection system.

Every year, the Children’s Conference is dedicated to supporting professionals, parents, social work students, administrators, and others who work with children and adolescents in educational, medical and home settings. Each year we bring in recognized leaders in child welfare and related professions, to speak to our participants about best practices as well as other topics of interest related to the well-being and safety of children.

Continental breakfast, lunch, child care, Spanish translation services and parking fee are included in the registration fee of $30.00. 

The mission of the HOPE Collaborative is to promote the safety of children and to prevent abuse and neglect in Riverside County. This mission is accomplished through the coordination and facilitation of interagency collaboration; efforts to raise community awareness; education and training of professionals, parents, and the community; services to child abuse victims and families impacted by abuse and neglect; and advocacy efforts influencing public policy.
