Our History: 70+ Years Of Milestones

Since 1953, FSA has grown from Riverside roots to become a trusted, multi-service nonprofit serving families and individuals across the Inland Empire. Here’s a glimpse of our journey:

1953-1985

Family Service Agency of Riverside, founded by the Junior League, establishes a reputation for high quality and affordable counseling services. The operating budget consists of $250,000 per year with 15 full-time employees.

1988

The agency embarks on an ambitious strategy to meet the changing needs of families. With child care needs expanding, FSA begins operation of the Rubidoux Child Development Center.

1990

The Family Service Association of Western Riverside County becomes Family Service Association reflecting the growth of services provided & the areas served.

1994

FSA operating budget reaches 1.7 million per year with 80 full-time employees and eight office locations.

1994-1996

FSA begins operation of the Good Hope and Mead Valley Community Centers.

1998

FSA celebrates the grand opening of the Mission Villas Senior Housing Complex on April 15, 1998.

2002-2003

FSA purchases and occupies the 32,000 square foot professional building in Moreno Valley. The Hemlock Child Development Center opens.

2005-2006

FSA expands its Senior Nutrition services to San Bernardino County.

2009-2010

First 5 Riverside County awards FSA Kids 1st Funding. The agency budget reaches $22 million.

2012-2013

Innovative Mobile Fresh program and H.O.P.E. Child Abuse Prevention Council are established.

2018

After 33 years of dedicated service, CEO Dom Betro retires. Under his leadership, FSA expanded from a $250,000 agency to a $26 million organization.

2020-2021

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, FSA increased services across the Inland Empire serving more than 20,000 people with more than a million meals.

2021

FSA welcomes Cheryl-Marie Hansberger as Chief Executive Officer, ushering in a new era of growth and innovation.

2022 - 2024

FSA is honored as California Nonprofit of the Year by Senator Rosilicie Ochoa Bogh for exemplary service to the Inland Empire. A year later, FSA is chosen as Nonprofit of the Year by the City of Moreno Valley & recognized during their State of the City.
