Kids 1st Program
Funded by First 5 Riverside, The Kids 1st Program offers a comprehensive system of care designed to significantly increase early childhood social competence and decrease the development of disruptive behavior disorders in children ages 0-5. Through the Kids 1st Program, families are able to benefit from a full continuum of evidence-based services which include case management services, Triple P and Incredible Years parenting classes, traditional therapy and intensive treatment such as Parent-Child Interaction Therapy.

Eligibility Criteria
Families with children between the ages 0-5 are eligible to receive Kids 1st services at no cost. There is no income requirement.
Length of Treatment
Length of Treatment is based on an individual basis and may vary depending on which level of intervention is recommended for the family and on the success of the Behavior/Care Plan goals established in case management. Involvement in The Kids 1st Program can vary approximately between 4 weeks and 40 weeks.
Description of Services
Children and their parents/caregivers may receive one or a combination of the following services.
Case Management–A service that assists persons with referrals to community resources such as, but not limited to: income assistance, education, housing, medical care, treatment, vocational preparation, and recreation. A case manager meets with the client and completes a Family Needs Assessment. A Case Plan is then created based on the family’s needs. Information and referrals will are provided and if necessary, assistance in accessing the services can also be provided by case managers. The case manager maintains contact with the client until the client and family exits The Kids 1st Program.
Triple P Level 3—Accredited staff work individually with the parent/caregiver to provide brief behavioral counseling as an early detection and brief intervention approach to managing identified problems. This service is four sessions total.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy— Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that helps clients to understand the thoughts and feelings that influence behaviors. CBT is commonly used to treat a wide range of disorders, including phobias, addiction, depression and anxiety.
CBT is generally short-term and focused on helping clients deal with a very specific problem. During the course of treatment, people learn how to identify and change destructive or disturbing thought patterns that have a negative influence on behavior. This service is a total of 9 sessions.
Incredible Years Basic Parenting— This 10 session group parenting class focuses on strengthening parenting skills and consists of components which build upon one another.
The series includes: strengthening children’s social skills, emotional regulation, school readiness skills, positive discipline and praise.
Triple P Level 4—This is a 9-session parenting program that incorporates sessions on causes of children’s behavior problems, strategies for encouraging children’s development, and strategies for managing misbehavior. Active skills training methods used in the sessions include modeling, rehearsal, self-evaluation, and homework tasks.
Triple P Level 5—Accredited staff work individually with the parents/caregivers to provide mood management and stress coping skills for parents, and marital communication skills as required. This service can vary from 3 to 8 sessions.
PCIT—Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is an evidence-based parent-child treatment program that assists parents of children with behavioral problems (aggression, non-compliance, defiance, and temper tantrums). Originally developed by Dr. Shelia Eyberg, PCIT is a unique treatment program that focuses on promoting positive parent-child relationships and interactions while teaching parents effective child management skills. PCIT has been adapted as an intervention for many different types of families (child welfare population, at-risk families, adoptive families and foster families
Who Provides Services Under the Program
Case Managers, MFT Interns, LMFTs, accredited Triple P staff and certified PCIT clinicians. All services are provided in English and Spanish.
